Swallowing difficulties, heartburn and diverticula – precise diagnosis and gentle treatment

Benign diseases of the esophagus can present with a variety of symptoms: difficulty swallowing, heartburn, or a feeling of pressure behind the breastbone are common. These symptoms can significantly impact the quality of life of those affected and should not be underestimated.
The most common clinical conditions include reflux disease (reflux of stomach acid), eosinophilic oesophagitis and oesophageal diverticula–from Zenker’s diverticulum to epiphrenic diverticula. The causes of these conditions are varied, and their early diagnosis plays a crucial role in successful treatment. In addition to these conditions, there are also other functional disorders of the esophagus, such as achalasia or other mobility disorders, which require thorough evaluation.
