“We never give up on anyone, ever.” This has probably also become the guiding principle of our interdisciplinary team, which has set itself the goal of ensuring the life and quality of life of our pancreatic cancer patients in the best possible way. Personally, I am one of the most internationally recognized specialists in pancreatic cancer.
The pancreas is the metabolic and digestive gland of the human body and a very sensitive organ. In addition to unknown causes and genetic factors, chronic pancreatitis or certain cysts can lead to the development of pancreatic cancer. can lead to cancer in the pancreas. The worst and most aggressive form, pancreatic carcinoma, can also originate directly in the pancreas—often unnoticed and without precursors.
Treatment of pancreatic cancer
In the treatment of pancreatic cancer, surgery is performed in cases of doubt and the affected area is removed in accordance with global standards. Surgery is only indicated if the tumor has not yet metastasized to neighboring organs. Wherever possible, minimally invasive and robot-assisted procedures are used to perform the operation as gently as possible.
Additional therapies
As a high-tech procedure, we will be using an innovative treatment method at the University Clinic for Surgery Salzburg – based on my positive experience: the so-called NanoKnife, also known as Irreversible Electropolation (IRE).
The NanoKnife uses electrical impulses of up to several thousand volts to destroy the affected tumor tissue. In contrast to other methods, the surrounding healthy tissue is not damaged. Even tumor tissue that is challenging to access can be effectively treated with the NanoKnife.
